  • Helping Acute Watery Diarrhoea patients in Bangladesh

AWD (Acute Watery Diarrhoea) is a deadly but treatable disease that affects millions worldwide.

AWD is caused by an infection of the intestine caused by a bacterium Vibrio Cholerae. This bacteria causes the production of large amounts of fluid in the intestine leading to profuse diarrhoea and vomits.

The infection spreads when someone ingests food or water contaminated with the faeces or vomit of someone carrying the disease.

Contaminated food or water supplies can cause massive outbreaks in a short period of time, particularly in overcrowded areas such as slums or refugee camps.

AWD can be treated simply by immediately replacing the salts and fluids lost through vomits and diarrhoea. With prompt rehydratation less than one percent of AWD patients die.

    The Challenge

Doctor Without Borders is aiming to help the communities of Bangladesh to safely transport their AWD patients, from the refugee camps to the local health service centers. In this case, the concern is not only about the pacient's safety and comfort but also about the community's safety, by avoiding the spreading of the infection on the patient's journey.

The challenge is about designing a tool to transport AWD patients while protecting the carriers and the environment from catching the infection.

Important issues to take into account

The environment in which the solution is going to be used is a major influencer in the design. Communities in Bangladesh are totally rural, there are few marked roads and the land is very irregular, so wheels are not the best option for transporting a sick patient. The solution must be prepared to be carried by other people.

Materials considered in the design of the solution will be limited to local materials, since transportation is complicated around this areas. Also. its building must be simple enough to be worked out by the staff of the local health service center.

    Deliverables

The projects will be delivered in a digital PDF presentation or video including:

    - Detailed explanation of the logic behind the design of the proposal.

    - Blueprints of the solution proposed and assembly instructions. Its necessary to detail the materials that should be used and each part of the whole design.

    - Visual representation of the solution proposed.

    Evaluation Criteria:

    - Fitting the requirements of safety, dignity and construction.

    - Creativity and originality.

    - Delivers a significant impact in the lives of people.

    - Viability

The projects will be collected until April 18th by 23:00h. The winner will be announced on April the 20th.
